The story of the stolen demo bike….

Published by absadmin on August 30th, 2011 - in Bikes, News

So I came to work early today to get some work done. Danny was already in back working on bikes. As we always do, we put our city trash and recycling bins out back. Danny mentions to me, “Hey, there’s more homeless guys out back going through our garbage.” I mention, “yeah, what do you want me to do?, They’re like rats, you get rid of a couple, then a couple more come right back.” As I mention this I look out at them and say to Danny, “That’s our bike he’s on. Why is he on our bike?” Low and behold he had stolen it from an out of town customer that took it for a demo the night before. By now the dude is aware that I’m aware, and starts pedaling down the street. I run through the shop, grab the first bike accessible, and head out after him. I made sure to get a read on him before I grabbed the bike. I saw his head turn right on Swift Street towards Mission Street. Better then any illegal Belgium sprint cocktail, I had a full dose of adrenaline flowing through me by now. I sprinted down the street in a fit of rage. I took the right on to Swift Street, and scanned left and right. I look over in the 7-11 parking lot and see him walking through the lot with our bike. I yelled like a mad man at him that he better give me our bike. He instantly dropped it and acted like a beat puppy. He said he “bought from his friend the night before on the levy, and please just let me go”. I told him to get the f outta here before something happens. He was so scabbed up on his face and neck, between sores, and the last beating he got, that I didn’t want to get near him. Can you believe it? So let’s see, a customer foolishly locks a $3000 bike up in front of the Red Room, with a little cable lock. He gets it stolen, then the idiot thief is foolish enough to dig through a bike shops trash the next morning on the same bike? And I was lucky enough to be at work at 7:30 to see the fool. I’m a lucky guy.

ABS is a proud supporter of the Santa Cruz City Junior Lifeguard Program. This year ABS donated two Electra Cruisers to their end of the year fundraiser. This is a stoked Owen Shapleigh of Santa Cruz, picking up his new cruiser at last nights event. Thanks JG captains, staff and volunteers, for another great year of teaching ocean safety, and healthy fun and competition.

Good read, if only a bikers pipe dream, but check it out.

2012 Stumpjumper FSR Expert carbon Evo

Published by absadmin on July 17th, 2011 - in Bikes, News

You might have seen this in the press already, but I still wanted to share this bike as it is probably my favorite new 2012 bike from Specialized. This is the new Stumpjumper FSR Expert carbon Evo. 150mm of travel front and rear with a nice low bb and a revised 67 degree head angle. This should be a perfect trail slayer for our local trails. Better yet, Specialized is doing a Comp version as well for $1500 less, and if 150mm seems like to much travel, they still have the standard 140mm travel Comp level as well. In classic Specialized fashion, they are diversifying their bike lines as usual, which as confusing as it can be, leaves the end user with some great bike choices.

SC County bike shop bros. Including ABS (me, taking the picture), we have Scotts Valley, Santa Cruz, and Capitola represented here. Yes it’s true, occasionally we do hangout together. The annual Specialized Dealer Product Launch is a great time for us to hangout and compare our different bike industry perspectives.

The new 2012 Specialized Dissident full-face helmet as modeled by Chris at the 2012 Specialized dealer event down in Monterey. Sub 1000 grams, internal cooling channels, Eject system compatible, Leatt compatible, and ASTM DH approved. Besides all that, it might be the most comfortable full face bike helmets I’ve ever had on. I was blown away by the fit and the weight. All those features in a full carbon helmet at $350.

Ok so maybe Iggy was right, looks like freeride isn’t dead at all…

When Mitchell Scott stirred the pot with his story on the term Freeriding, Mike Hopkins and David Peacock replied in their own unique way – must watch!

Megavalanche 2011 Alpe d’Huez

Published by absadmin on July 12th, 2011 - in News, videos

Congrats to ABS customer Jon Fox. Jon just bought a new Mojo HD from us about a month and a half ago. He took his new Mojo HD to 153rd overall, 8th in class(masters 40+), in this, his first Megavalanche. That’s not bad when you consider over 2000 signed up, and then are slowly whittled down. Sounds like a crazy, like nothing else, downhill experience.
